Swine flu: How long should I wait before going to the doctor?

MissMely asked:

My 7 year old little sister has had 104 degree fever for about 4 hours. She has a slight cough, but no sore throat. She does feel fatigued. I am worried that it may be swine flu, but how long should I wait to go to the doctor? Should I wait at least 24 hours to see if the symptoms worsen? Is it possible that it may be a regular for allergies instead of swine flu?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

I would go immediately, especially with a temperature that high.  Tamiflu and other antiviral medications must be administered within the first 48 hours to be effective.  Allergies don’t usually cause a high temperature.
