Any good herbal remedies for skin rash?

doglover asked:

I got rashes on my neck for wearing sterling silver necklace. I stopped wearing the necklace. Any herbal remedies to make my skin heal faster? Anyone tried olive oil?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
First off, I’d like to know if there’s anything in the chains other than sterling silver.  It sounds a great deal like an allergic reaction.  Any allergy is possible, but I haven’t heard many reports of allergy to sterling silver.
Basing my answer on the allergy, the first thing I can do is congratulate you on stopping wearing the necklaces.  Until you can rule allergy out, I’d act as if that’s the problem.  Olive oil by itself may be enough and usually does not cause additional problems, however given the odd nature of the problem, I’d suggest you test any recommendations on a small area before using it on all the rash.  I do not recommend aloe vera, as it can be a problem.  Lemon balm tea could also help, as it sometimes acts like a natural antihistamine.
Most important to me is that you make sure that an allergy is the problem.  It may require a “scratch test,” but it would be a good idea to know for sure what the problem is.

My eyes are constantly swelling on the bottom and on the top?

lp_gal3210 asked:

It looks like I have wrinkles under my eyes. My eyes are also red and dry. The doctor told me it’s just bad allergies. I am on eye drops, singulair, and clarinex. It doesn’t seem to help. Does anyone know any home remedies?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
The first step would be to find out exactly what you are allergic to.  Avoiding it could then be a big help.  There are a few products that can be sprayed on such areas as mattresses as well as put into the dryer with pillows.  Even if you cannot find them, just running pillows through a dryer may help kill dust mites, etc.

What's the best way to get rid of dark undereye circles?

The Kat asked:

Does anyone know a good concealer, eye cream or some kind of home remedy that will get rid of undereye circles. I have pale skin and allergies, so my circles are very noticable. Please, I need advice! Thanks.
I also have fine lines under my eyes, so concealers cannot be cakey.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You might try applying fresh sliced cucumber to your eyes.  As for the concealer, you might want to have a makeup artist help.  Applying concealer directly on the puffy, dark area may draw attention to it.  Using a lighter concealer next to the nose and under the circles half way could help more, but it is easier for someone to show you than for me to tell you.

We smell like old people? (ok just moth balls)?

dj_n1dalan asked:

My roomates and I recently moved into an apt, we are all 22 and we really smell 72. The apartment smells like mothballs and the smell is getting stronger even though there are no mothballs in our apt. HOW DO WE GET RID OF THE SMELL? I’m mostly looking for an old home remedy as my allergies are sensitive and Glade products cause a severe reaction.

thanks

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

Camphor is hard to get rid of, and I would imagine that is the primary ingredient in your moth balls.  What you use depends on several factors, including the things you are allergic to.  Cedar chips could help, but it will take time.  Febreeze and other air cleaners could work, but you may react to them.

Essential oils, particularly the wicks that have been recently introduced could be an alternative, but you’d have to experiment to find out which you are not allergic to.

The odor is probably into anything cloth, such as drapes, carpet and upholstery.  Having these cleaned could reduce your problem greatly.

I know I should put this in the diet and fitness section, but you guys look in pretty good shape?

Donnie Darko asked:

I just need some breathing techniques for when I go running, I get out of breath really fast and I stop and walk for a few minutes and then start running again. What can I do to run longer?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You may want to visit your doc.  Asthma can restrict breathing and increased physical activity can make it worse.  I don’t know if that’s what you are dealing with, but it is a possibility.

What are the best herbal remedies for migraines?

TJ asked:

I suffer from daily migraines. I have seen 4 neurologist and none have treated the causes of my migraines. I have taken just about every prescription and am now willing to venture into herbal remedies.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You might try seeing a doctor who deals with allergies.  Neurological problems may not be the source.  For instance, my mother (who is also a registered nurse) gets migraines when exposed to plants she’s allergic to.
Feverfew is the “go to” herb for herbalists when a client is dealing with a migraine.  It contains some salicin, so if you are allergic to aspirin it is a bad idea.  Willow bark may be added to the mix.  It has a lot of salicin, so the same aspirin warning exists.  While waiting for the teas to work, lavender water on a cool cloth may help soothe the pain away.
