Weight lifting injury?

jow b asked:

About three weeks ago I was doing some shoulder press with very heavy weight, when i felt a sharp pain shoot across my right shoulder. I have had the pain every since. Does anyone have an idea what it might be. It is causing me to not be able to work out. Scared to go to the doctor out of fear I might need surgery. Has anyone had this. Is there a home remedy? Please advise

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
Get to the doctor.  If you do need surgery now is better than later.  If you don’t, physical therapy and pain management can reduce the chance of increasing the injury.
Home remedies can help after a diagnosis is made.  Alternating heat and cold may help as well as capsaicin cream.  Using this as your only treatment could lead to a lot of problems down the road.

I was working as a CNA and injury my back with pain radiates to my legs? I need help?

sue q asked:

This happen 6 months ago. My doctor didn’t send me for any treatment until months later. He gave me pain and muscle relaxer because I was having back spasm at night. I had a MRI and spine is OK but I have some muscle damage. I walk like a two year old. A lot of pain in my knees. I’m also overweight which does not help my problem. Any remedies. I started PT and only thing was done was give me 3 exercises to do at home. Help!

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
Have they totally ruled sciatica out?  If my early days working with my mom in a nursing home still applies, CNAs do a lot of lifting and sometimes it is in difficult positions.  A pinched nerve would not surprise me, but I’m not a doc.
PT should help, but you may want to ask your doctor about doing knee flexion under load.  The only reason I know that is that I’m a hefty lady myself.  After two major accidents I needed PT.  My doctor was adamant that squats and exercises of that nature were not to be part of the therapy.  Believe me, the pain of doing it once or twice was enough to convince me.
As for alternative remedies, there are a few.  However, it is important to make sure you first do no harm.  Capsaicin creams can help deaden nerve endings, shutting down the pain sensation to the brain.  Test it on a small area to prevent burns.  Alternating heat and cold could also be useful.

How do I know if I'm losing too much blood?

Hello asked:

I’m afraid I’m losing too much blood and I don’t want to become anemic. First of all, I have extremely heavy periods,, so that’s always been a concern for me. I’m also involved in self-injury (please, don’t criticize me about this), so I’m losing a good amount of blood each day (especially when I’m on my period).

Are there any symptoms that might show that I’m losing too much blood? If so, what can I do to help my body renew my blood without having to stop what I’m currently doing?

I don’t plan to go to a doctor about any of this because of various reasons, so please just provide some home remedies. Thanks.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

I am familiar with cutting, my nephew has had that problem.  Even though you don’t want to…and I truly understand why…you really should talk to a doc.  There are ways of doing so anonymously and getting counseling.  We all have our problems and judging you is not something I will ever do.

I would like to make a couple of suggestions.  Counseling does not have to include doctors.  Our younger daughter did peer counseling for eight years, and I’m sure she is not the only one.  There may even be something like that set up at your school.

I can’t tell what your age is, but I am guessing you are a young person, perhaps in high school or early college.  If you are under 18, you will need to talk to your parents about using herbal remedies.  Several of them can cause problems when you are under eighteen.  All of them have side effects, precautions and interactions.

I can’t diagnose you, and I definitely wouldn’t try via post.  However, it occurs to me you may have depression and/or an anxiety disorder.  Work with someone you know and trust that understands herbs.  St. John’s Wort and kava kava could help you if taken properly.

Please do reach out and get help.

What would cause pain when inhaling on my lower right back?

Jason E asked:

Three days ago I started having sharp pain in my lower right back when inhaling. The rest of my lower back hurts as well, but does not have the sharp pains when inhaling. A friend suggested I might have pulled a muscle. I am wondering why this would cause pain when breathing, and what I can do to relieve the pain.

What are some good ways to relieve back pain from sports?

D Thrasher asked:

Every once in a while I get sharp pain in my lower back. I’m guessing it’s from working out for long periods of time and over exerting myself. Any suggestions to relieve the pain or prevent it from coming back again?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
If you have access to a coach, it might be wise to consult with him/her.  You might also wish to consult with your doctor, just as a precaution.  There are several herbal options for muscle pain.  One of the best is capsaicin, the hot constituent of cayenne peppers.  You can probably find a cream or gel with capsaicin at your local supermarket or pharmacy.
When you put it on your skin, you will notice s burning sensation. It is best to put a small amount on if you’ve never used ot before, to make sure your skin can tolerate it.  The burning acts as a counter-irritant, which turns off the pain sensation going to your brain.
