What are the differences between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes?

HULK RULES!! asked:

I know type one is deadlier. But symptom wise, what are the differences between the 2 types of diabetes?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
Actually, both have the potential of being deadly.  Type one diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes because most of those who are diagnosed with it are young.  This type is insulin depenednent.
Type two diabetes is not necessarily insulin dependent, though it can be.  There is usually at least some insulin being produced, just not enough.  Left untreated, both are deadly.

What causes people with Type 1 diabetes to get bad headaches and migraines?

Chris asked:

My little brother has type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed with it at 12 months old and he sometimes get bad migraines. What causes migraines and bad headaches when you have type 1 diabetes?

He is 17 years old and is a big part of me. If something ever happened to him, damn I don’t know what I’d do.
I need some responses here guys.
Thank Tralee, but he already has an insulin pump as do most people with type 1.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

Severe headaches may be a sign that his blood sugar is no longer under proper control.  After a bout of low blood sugar, headaches are possible.  He should see his doctor as soon as possible in case this is the case.

I know I should put this in the diet and fitness section, but you guys look in pretty good shape?

Donnie Darko asked:

I just need some breathing techniques for when I go running, I get out of breath really fast and I stop and walk for a few minutes and then start running again. What can I do to run longer?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You may want to visit your doc.  Asthma can restrict breathing and increased physical activity can make it worse.  I don’t know if that’s what you are dealing with, but it is a possibility.

I need some ideas for home treatments for Bronchitises?

7thDay Sinner Anonymous asked:

I went to the doctor yesterday and found out I had it. All 3 of my girls have it or so I am very sure. My insurance makes a doctor visit $25 and I only have $30 meaning I only have money to take one of the 3 girls to the doctor’s office. I am a week out from payday. Please advise on home cures that I can do to help my children. By the way telling me about herbal remedies will be welcome advise!

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

I’m a mom, so I understand the dilemma.  However, the answer depends on a large number of things.  Here are a few, and I will address those.  Most doctors and herbalists won’t do any more than that due to the potential liability.
Symptoms of bronchitis can be the precursor of or mask other illnesses, and they may not have so good an outcome.  For the sake of your daughters, please use this as a guide, not as a  means to diagnose, prescribe and/or treat.
The definition of bronchitis is swelling of the bronchiols, which are tubes that lead off into the lungs.  This swelling can stop near the trachea (windpipe) or go deep into the lungs.  No matter how far it goes, it makes breathing difficult and coughing painful.  If you’re lucky, it may last only a few days and recovery may be quick.
That is not always the case, though.  For instance, if there is another cause (the flu, an infection, etc.), it can last and it may lead to other problems…pneumonia being one.
There is very little that can be done herbally that will absolutely heal and/or prevent repercussions.  There are things that can help, but don’t depend on them.  As a parent, you will have to judge whether these home remedies are working or whether or not more aggressive medical treatment is needed.  I’m not there.  I can’t tell you.
Simple solutions use steam.  I’ve used a really hot shower when nothing else was available, though boiling 1/4 cup of vinegar and a cup of water may also help.  Breath the steam in.  If you must, do so through the mouth but try to progress till you can use your nose as well.
Herbs can help, and some of my favorites are probably in your kitchen.  Bring a cinnamon stick to a simmer in a cup and a half of water.  As it’s simmering, breath the steam.  When it’s done, wrap up in a blanket and drink it.  It should simmer down to 3/4 cup.  The blanket is important, as this usually causes intense sweating.  If you are not wrapped up, you could get worse.
In all of this, keep watch.  At any point a crisis  may arise and the doctor may be needed.  Herbal remedies can help us, but there are always times when an expert is needed.

What is the best diabetes supplements in the market ?

seb t asked:

I try to control my diet and do moderate exercise every alternate days for about 20 minutes. It is difficult to manage my diabetes, friends say having diabetes supplement is another way. Any suggestions.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
Before starting any supplements, you should consult your doctor.  Many supplements can affect your medications and could be life threatening.  There have been some studies done on several herbs that indicate possible benefits.  Three major clinical trials have been done on cinnamon bark, and it does seem to lower blood sugar levels.  It is important to discuss this with your doctor and to closely monitor your blood sugar if it is approved.

Whats the difference between type 1 diabetes and type 2?

Yo… asked:

Hi everyone.
My boss just found out her 16 year old daughter has type 1 diabetes. We were all very sad to hear the news. Apparently she will be taking medication everyday for the rest of her life and she has a strict diet to follow. What’s the difference between type 1 and type 2? Also, do people with diabetes have a tendency to be thin and lose a lot of weight because of their diet? Apparently before she was diagnosed, she lost 10 pounds within a month.

Thanks!

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes because it usually strikes young people.  It is insulin dependent diabetes,  meaning her pancreas is not producing the hormone.  Type 2 diabetes does not necessarily mean you need to take insulin, though it can get to that stage.

One signal that someone has type one diabetes is weight loss.  The body cannot use the sugar normally found in the blood.  This causes the sugar to be excreted in urine.  Because that sugar equals calories, weight loss is likely.  The loss of body fluids in excess urination can cause dehydration, which is another thing that can cause weight loss.

How high are my risks for getting diabetes?

im not that innocent asked:

My sister has type 1 diabetes, and she told me that I have a good chance of getting it too because our great grandfather and his mother had diabetes. A lot of other people in my family have it, on my mom’s side. What are my chances of getting Type 1 diabetes?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
The causes of type 1 diabetes are not known, but one possible reason is genetics.  While it is not a certainty that you will develop this illness, it is possible.  Make sure that you are tested regularly so that the problems associated with diabetes don’t rear their ugly heads.

What is the difference between hypothyroid and hyperthyroid? Shall we take same medicines for both?

Yogesh K asked:

Is Hypothyroid and Hyperthyroid are the same thing and are medicines the same ?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
No, they are pretty much opposites.  Hypothyroidism means your thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormone.  Sometimes, it doesn’t produce any at all.  Hyperthyroidism means it produces too much hormone.  The medications are not the same, either.  Adding more thyroid hormone to someone with too much is going to make matters worse, and vice versa.

Can diabetes cause you hair to fall out?

guts_spunk_moxie asked:

I have diabetes (newly diagnosed, but apparently I have had it fo a while and didn’t know it according to my doctor) and my hair keeps falling out near the crown and in the back, causing thin spots.
Someone told me that this can be a symptomatic cause from having diabetes. Is this true and if so; why?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
Yes, there is probably a connection between diabetes and hair loss, though that is not necessarily the case.  You might want to discuss this with your doctor.  Both the illness and some medications prescribed can lead to hair loss.  Poor circulation, scalp problems and stress from the illness can play a part in hair loss.
Because it may be related to medication and it could be caused by other problems, you should mention the hair loss to your doctor.

How does one combat obesity when you are hypothyroid. I have been trying to find an answer to this?

Beenu P asked:

I am a hypothyroid and am trying to reduce weight, but with no-effect. Crash-diets make me have headached, if i go hungry and i cant seem to stick to an exercise regime. Any suggestions to help?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You haven’t said whether or not you are on thyroid medications.  If you are and they aren’t helping, you may need blood tests to be sure the dosage is correct.  While a few herbs may help in certain instances, no plant substance mimics thyroid hormones.
Crash diets are a bad idea, but most of us do them from one time to another.  If you want to get a good idea of what you are eating and how many calories you are burning, there are several good websites that can help.  It’s kind of interesting to calculate both what you eat and what you do.  I ended up making something of a game out of it, so I’d stick to it.
Exercise is a problem for many people.  For some people it’s a time thing.  For others pain may be an issue.  One thing I learned to do was to park my car as far away from whatever shop I needed to visit, which added several minutes of walking on shopping day.  If you are stuck at a desk, see if someone will walk with you at lunch.
