Tens, EMS WITHOUT prescription?

life_adventure_trek asked:

Does anyone know where I can go online to purchase a Tens Unit or EMS unit without a prescription? I have used one in the past and it helped and am currently seeing both PCP and Physical Therapist… Doctor wants me to try MANY other alternatives and I am in chronic pain! If I’m paying cash and I know they are safely used for pain management (both physical therapist and chiropractor use them on me) and I don’t want to hassle with process… surely there is somewhere that I can purchase without the script?!!! Any links please?!!!!

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
There are reasons some equipment should be purchased only by trained professionals.  The easiest one to site is that they are only available by prescription.  However to leave it at that is a cop-out.  It takes training and guidance from your doctor to know how to properly use this machine for your safety.  TENS (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation is considered safe when used properly but it can be used improperly and cause more problems than it solves.

Home remedies for tight muscles?

nightingale974 asked:

I have a tendency to store tension in my trapezius muscles. As a result they become really tight a lot of the time lately it’s gotten worse. I’d been using an herbal kind of supplement which helped a bit, but since I’m having surgery (on my knee) in a couple of weeks I’m not supposed to take anything herbal. I had a massage a week or so ago but that helped only temporarily. I’d thought about applying heat, but I’ve heard that might make it worse (not sure). Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

There are several ways herbs can be used for muscle tension.  Unfortunately, most can’t be used before surgery.  The time period stipulated is usually that all herbal supplements be stopped a minimum of two weeks before.
That said, there are a few herbal oils that might be allowable for massage.  You should always consult your doctor, even for something topical.  the simplest is pure olive oil.  It has healing properties in its own right and may not interfere with the medications and anesthesias used for surgery.
Adding other essential oils may be somewhat tricky, as most have some major interactions even when they are just applied to the skin.  The ones I’d ask about would be lavender, chamomile, passionflower and jasmine.
If your doctor does not know the properties of these herbs, it might be wise to have an herbalist provide information about the side effects, precautions and interactions these herbs might pose in a surgical setting.
After the surgery, you may require herbal support.  The above herbs properly prepared may be useful, but there are others that can be used both topically and internally.  Feel free to ask more questions.

Why do I have such chronic upper back pain?

Mrs. Rucker asked:

Okay im 20 yrs young my back has went out on me before about 4 yrs ago. But this doesnt feel the same. Its a pain going around the inner side of my shoulder blade right behind my heart. I have had this pain for 7 months and I have been seeing a cryopractor for about a month now (he was thinking it was a rib injury, but I havent had any injuries of that sort), but it has gotten worse. At first it just hurt when I layed down. NOW it hurts when I move all which ways and im having back spasms that go with my heart beat when I exhaile and some times when I inhale and it takes my breath away with pain, (contracting the muscle there). I can hardly lift my arms without it spasming out. Is my back going to go out again? Is there a home remedy??? Somebody please help me!!!!!!!

What home remedies are there to get rid of my neck pain?

Tremendo the Great asked:

It’s on the left side of my neck. I’ve been having it off and on for months. I’ve tried heating it, icing it, stretching it. I don’t have the money to go see a physical therapist or chiropractor right now. That is NOT an option. Anyone have any home remedies that might help?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You may want to see a regular doctor fairly soon, especially if over the counter pain remedies are not working at all.  It could be a sign of something more serious than strain.
In the mean time, you might try a pain cream containing capsaicin.  It may block the pain sensation from going to the brain.

alternative remedies for asteoarthritis?

jos_64 asked:

She gets pain in the joints in the feet and the joints above knees up to hips, using anti-inflamatories and physical application of tropical oils, and relief is scanty; tis situation finding her difficult to stand longer hours in work situation

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
Capsaicin cream may be a better alternative if her skin is not too sensitive.  A mixture of herbs steeped in olive oil may also help.  Willow bark, comfrey and gotu kola are good herbs to use.  You could also make a decoction of them.
Be careful with tropical oils.  Even if they are only applied to the skin, there’s a chance that it could increase cholesterol levels.

What causes people with Type 1 diabetes to get bad headaches and migraines?

Chris asked:

My little brother has type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed with it at 12 months old and he sometimes get bad migraines. What causes migraines and bad headaches when you have type 1 diabetes?

He is 17 years old and is a big part of me. If something ever happened to him, damn I don’t know what I’d do.
I need some responses here guys.
Thank Tralee, but he already has an insulin pump as do most people with type 1.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

Severe headaches may be a sign that his blood sugar is no longer under proper control.  After a bout of low blood sugar, headaches are possible.  He should see his doctor as soon as possible in case this is the case.

What are the best herbal remedies for migraines?

TJ asked:

I suffer from daily migraines. I have seen 4 neurologist and none have treated the causes of my migraines. I have taken just about every prescription and am now willing to venture into herbal remedies.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You might try seeing a doctor who deals with allergies.  Neurological problems may not be the source.  For instance, my mother (who is also a registered nurse) gets migraines when exposed to plants she’s allergic to.
Feverfew is the “go to” herb for herbalists when a client is dealing with a migraine.  It contains some salicin, so if you are allergic to aspirin it is a bad idea.  Willow bark may be added to the mix.  It has a lot of salicin, so the same aspirin warning exists.  While waiting for the teas to work, lavender water on a cool cloth may help soothe the pain away.

How is sciatica pain different from back pain?

¢нєєку кιттєи™ [вαвÿ løṿε] asked:

I have a shooting like pain down one side of my lower back which runs down towards my buttocks.
I am unable to bend due to this pain. And when i do, its really painful.
Does it sound like sciatica? Or just normal back pain?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
Sciatica is nerve pain along the sciatic nerve.  It’s actually a symptom, not a disease all by itself.  Nerve compression is usually the cause but what and why needs to be discovered.  The pain can start in the lower back and follow the nerve down the back of your legs.
There are a couple of things that may help deal with the pain.  One is capsaicin, which may deaden the nerve endings and stop sending pain signals to your brain.  An oil extract of comfrey, gotu kola and willow bark may also help.
