How to reduce foot pain, leg pain and back pain while standing at work for a long time?

Shawn asked:

Hi everyone.
I was just wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to reduce foot pain, leg pain, and back pain while on the job at work.

Thanks! :(
I want to know if there is any foods, minerals, and what not that might be able to help me reduce the pain.

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

Actually, I suspect a change in footwear may be more helpful than a supplement in this case.  There are several brands that help redistribute your weight and improve posture, both of which can improve foot, leg and back pain from standing.  My favorite is Earth Shoes, and they have several styles ranging from hiking boots to dress shoes.

Because the pain is over such a large area, I don’t recommend capsaicin in this instance.  If you’re over 18 and aren’t allergic to aspirin, find a rub that contains salycin.  You can also make your own, using olive oil and willow bark.  Adding gotu kola may be a good idea, as well.  If there’s any arthritis the combo may be all you need.

I stand on a hard floor for 8 hours a day (everyday) at work. By the time I go home my back is hurting so bad I find it hard to stand up-right and walk. Back belts are not allowed. Is there anything I can do to ease the pain while I’m working?

How can I get rid of a headache without taking medicine?

Hello!!!!!!!!! asked:

I have a headache but I hate swallowing pills and have no other alternatives at this moment (like chewable pills, etc).

Is there any way that I can get rid of my headache without taking medicine?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:

It depends on what is causing the headache.  There are a few different things that can be done, but not all of them work on every type of headache.  If you have a migraine, for instance, feverfew may come in handy.  However, if you are allergic to aspirin, neither that nor willow bark are a good idea.

If it’s a stress headache, you might benefit from some relaxing herbs, such as chamomile or rosemary.  If they aren’t quite strong enough, jasmine or passionflower could help.

Sinus headaches may be helped by willow bark and/or yarrow.  Breathing steam, either from boiling water and vinegar or a steamy shower may be useful.

How do you ease back pain quickly and without drugs of any sort?

Kate M asked:

I am a Tech. Intelligent Light Head for my theatre and because of that, I have to sit on a metal stool for about 4 hours straight. I can’t switch to a chair because then I cannot see over my monitor to see my lights and moving the machines are not options. Sitting in this position really takes a number on my back and shoulders. Does anyone have a technique for easing the pain?

Capsiacin is a good choice, as it may stop the pain sensation from going to your brain.  Menthol and camphor are also strong counter-irritants.  Most pharmacies and supermarkets carry creams and gels with that in it.

What causes a headache in the same spot above an eye?

nataliya05 asked:

What could possibly cause this kind of a headache…It’s usually in one spot above the right eye. This has been going on for about 9 months now and the headaches come randomly about 3-4 times a week (doesn’t seem to be caused because of change in weather). The pain is usually sharp just in that area. Could this be serious or is it just a normal thing to deal with? What can cause this and what can be done to prevent it other then to drink pills?

Mary Bodel, MH replies:
You don’t say whether or not there is any swelling there, but I suspect there is.  Part of your sinuses are above the eyes, and it sounds like the one over your right eye is inflammed for some reason.  Only a doctor can diagnose this and tell you the exact reason.
While you’re waiting to visit the doctor, try the old boiling water and vinegar trick;  pur 1/4 cup of vinegar into a cup of boiling and breathe the steam.  This may help clear the sinuses.
