At one point or another in our lives, all of us will most likely have to deal with depression. It can be caused by events in our lives or by problems with our body. For some, depression becomes so deep medical intervention is required.

What Is Depression?

Depression is defined as an overwhelming feeling of sadness and a sense of despair. The depressed person shuts him or herself off from others and turns inwards. Thoughts of suicide may occur. If you or someone you love starts to feel this way, it is time for the doctor.

Herbal Remedies for Depression

For mild to moderate depression, there are a few herbs which may help. Some may have antidepressant properties and others may help with some of the side effects of depression.

St. John’s Wort

Several studies indicate that this herb may be useful in dealing with mild to moderate depression. There is one important side effect to be aware off; it can cause you to become photosensitivie. St. John’s Wort also has many interactions with other herbs and medications. This is especially true of other antidepressants.

Valerian

Sometimes, insomnia comes along with depression. Valerian may be useful in combatting this side effect. Be warned, the stuff smells worse than used gym socks…and most cats adore it. Like St. John’s Wort, there are many interactions between valerian and medications.

Kava Kava

This herb is often used to ease anxiety. It has also become something of a fad in some places, kava bars are springing up and people are drinking the tea instead of alcohol. It is only fair to warn you that overindulging on this herb has gotten at least one driver a DUI.

Mild Herbs

The following herbs are mild, and can usually be “mixed and matched.” Chamomile, jasmine, lavender and passionflower can make a nice, soothing tea. Lavender is also useful as an aromatherapy oil to help you relax even more.

Important

All herbs have some chance of interacting with other herbs and medications. St. John’s Wort, Valerian and Kava Kava have too many to list here. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before trying them, for your own protection.
